Our Story

Crafty Studio is a fabric and art shop based in Dublin city. We stock a large amount of dressmaking, quilting and craft fabrics. Our fabric selection is carefully chosen by myself for both quality and diversity. Our stock includes beautiful quality Irish and European Ex-designer and deadstock fabrics, including Irish Linen. We also stock sewing tools, thread, haberdashery and accessories. We aim to price everything we sell fairly, so if we get a good deal so do you!

Crafty Studio, is made up of myself and my husband Fintan. We are both qualified art teachers with a passion for learning and creating. While textiles are my thing, Fintan studies and has a passion for drawing and oil painting.

I have always been creating in some way or another all my life. The daughter to a pattern-maker/ tailoress and a ‘I can make anything’ mechanic, I caught the making bug very early. I grew up surrounded by fabric, watching my Mam sew while I hemmed curtains after school. There were often trips to fabric warehouses that have long since closed up!

Years later all grown up with little people of my own to look after Im doing something similar. Though Im yet to get them to hem anything! I teach Art and Design in a local secondary school, sewing and textiles classes with local community groups. When I’m not teaching, I am in our studio, the Crafty Studio!

While teaching sewing classes students remarked on how difficult it was to find fabric and haberdashery. The local old reliable shops were all closing down. This led Fintan and I to set up Crafty Studio website. We aim to supply quality materials for a variety for arts and crafts, at a good value price.

Continuing the Tradition

Ann-Marie isn’t the only one with a family background in the profession.

Fintan comes from a long line of fabric sellers. His grandfather, James Boyle, was a travelling draper who sold cloth far and wide—across Britain after the end of the Irish Civil War in 1923, in America during the Great Depression from 1928 to 1932, and later throughout Ireland in the 1930s. He eventually followed another family tradition by becoming the owner of a threshing mill.

Selling suit lengths offered a rare path to self-employment and economic progress at a time when jobs were scarce and small plots of farmland were barely viable on their own. This tradition stretches back through earlier generations and is unique to certain families from the townlands of Dromintee, Carrickbroad, and the surrounding area in South Armagh.

Despite spending much of his life on the road, Fintan’s grandfather maintained a deep connection to his home and rural identity. At heart, he was always a farmer—and no matter how far he travelled, even sailing to America twice, he always came back home.

Today, we’re proud to carry that legacy forward—no longer on the road, but as shopkeepers rooted in the community. Just like those who came before us, we continue to sell suit lengths and other goods, offering not just products but a connection to tradition, resilience, and local identity. In doing so, we honour the generations who paved the way with hard work, resourcefulness, and a deep sense of place.
