The name “White Nights” comes from St. Petersburg, where summer nights are long and the sky is never dark.  “White Nights” is a famous brand of professional watercolour paints.

The quality of your watercolour paper is of the greatest importance when it comes to watercolour painting.  If you choose the right surface it can greatly enhance the appearance of your artwork.  Your watercolour paper will need to be able to withstand multiple washes, be non-yellowing, sufficient in weight and consistent in its texture.  In general, watercolour papers are made from one of two materials; cotton or wood pulp.  100% cotton papers are professional quality, and are considered to offer the very best painting surface. What is gsm?

According to the University of Cambridge, gsm is “an abbreviation for ‘grams per square meter,’ a measure of density. It is often used to give the density of paper.” The abbreviation is not capitalized. It can also be written g/m2, which is the notation preferred by the International System of Units (SI). In the paper industry of Europe and other regions that employ the metric system, a sheet of paper of size A0 is exactly one square meter. The weight of an AO sheet of any kind of paper is the gsm for that kind.

The higher the gsm, the heavier the watercolour paper.
